Critical Illness Insurance: The Coverage Most People Overlook

Read time: 1 minute

Most people think of life insurance first, and for good reason. But there's a second kind of coverage that often gets overlooked: critical illness insurance.

A critical illness policy pays a tax-free lump sum if you're diagnosed with one of the covered conditions — typically cancer, heart attack, or stroke, among others. The payout is yours to use however you need: mortgage payments, treatment costs not covered by OHIP, time off work, or travel for care.

The reason it matters is simple. Surviving a serious diagnosis is more common than it used to be, and the financial pressure during recovery can be just as hard on a household as the medical side. Having a cushion means you can focus on getting better instead of on the bills.

Critical illness coverage pairs well with term life, and it doesn't have to be expensive to be meaningful. Worth a conversation.
